Canine Musculoskeletal Ultrasound

We are pleased to offer canine musculoskeletal ultrasound (MSK US) as a diagnostic service for referring veterinary surgeons. Access to MSK ultrasound in the UK has historically been limited due to the small number of appropriately trained clinicians.

This service complements our existing orthopaedic referral provision and expands our diagnostic capability for the assessment and management of canine soft tissue injuries, including tendinous, ligamentous, and muscular pathology.

Indications for MSK Referral & Commonly Scanned Areas

Services

Canine musculoskeletal ultrasound is utilised for diagnosis, treatment planning, and monitoring of a wide range of soft tissue conditions in both acute and chronic presentations.

  • Dynamic assessment of muscles, tendons, and ligaments
  • Serial monitoring of lesion progression and healing
  • Ultrasound-guided joint and intra-lesional injections
  • Support for regenerative medicine therapies (PRP, MSCT)
  • Objective assessment to guide rehabilitation protocols
  • Determination of the need for further advanced imaging (arthroscopy, CT)

Referring a Canine Musculoskeletal Ultrasound Case and Packages

Refer a Case

All patients are assessed by a member of the orthopaedic team prior to diagnostic ultrasound to confirm lesion localisation and ensure MSK ultrasound is the most appropriate diagnostic modality.

Patients are admitted as day cases and typically require sedation or general anaesthesia depending on lesion location and patient compliance.

A detailed referral report will be provided to the referring veterinary surgeon, and owners receive discharge instructions outlining ongoing management and rehabilitation recommendations.

Referrals can be submitted via our standard orthopaedic referral pathway or by contacting the referrals team directly.

Pricing depends on anatomical region, case complexity, and whether interventional procedures are required.
