Regenerative Medicine Referral

Eden Veterinary Referrals is pleased to offer a comprehensive Regenerative Medicine Service, utilizing autologous and allogeneic biological therapies to support tissue repair and functional recovery in canine patients

These therapies aim to modulate inflammation, stimulate endogenous repair pathways, and enhance structural tissue regeneration, providing a minimally invasive adjunct or alternative to surgical interventions where appropriate.

Regenerative medicine is increasingly supported by peer-reviewed literature and clinical trials in veterinary orthopaedics and soft tissue repair. These therapies are particularly relevant for chronic degenerative joint disease, musculotendinous injuries, and difficult-to-heal wounds, offering an evidence-informed approach for improved patient outcomes.

Our services include:

  • Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP)
  • Mesenchymal Stem Cell (MSC) therapy
  • Tissue engineering approaches

Regenerative Medicine

  • Osteoarthritis: stifle, elbow, shoulder, carpus, tarsus, hip joints
  • Musculotendinous injuries: supraspinatus tendinopathy, medial shoulder syndrome, Achilles tendinopathy, iliopsoas strains
  • Cartilage pathology: osteochondritis dissecans (OCD), elbow dysplasia
  • Chronic wounds: enhanced tissue repair in non-healing wounds

MSCs are multipotent adult stem cells capable of differentiating into cartilage, bone, or adipose tissue in vitro. Clinically, their therapeutic effects are thought to be largely paracrine, promoting endogenous repair through anti-inflammatory and immunomodulatory pathways.
Available MSC types:

  • Autologous (adipose-derived) – harvested from the falciform ligament, processed and expanded via Cell Therapy Sciences
  • Allogeneic (umbilical-derived; DogStem, TVM) – ready-to-use MSCs for joint or soft tissue injection

Clinical application includes:

  • Intra-articular injections for osteoarthritis
  • Intra-lesional injections for tendon and ligament injuries
  • Adjunctive therapy for chronic wounds

PRP is an autologous blood product enriched with platelets, growth factors, and cytokines. PRP can be leukocyte-rich or leukocyte-poor, depending on the therapeutic goal.

Key mechanisms:

  • Enhances cellular proliferation and matrix synthesis
  • Modulates local inflammation
  • Promotes angiogenesis and tissue remodelling

PRP is indicated for:

  • Tendon and ligament injuries
  • Osteoarthritis
  • Adjunctive support in post-surgical healing

Concurrent administration can provide synergistic effects:

  • PRP enhances MSC activity via growth factor-mediated proliferation and differentiation
  • Accelerated functional recovery in moderate-to-severe injuries
  • Reduced local inflammation and improved pain modulation

Referring A Case

Patients can be referred via their primary care veterinarian or physiotherapist. Evaluation includes:

  • Comprehensive musculoskeletal assessment
  • Diagnostic imaging (radiography, MSK ultrasound, arthroscopy, CT, MRI)
  • Individualized treatment planning integrating regenerative therapies with surgical or conservative management

We frequently manage sporting and working dogs, leveraging our orthopaedic and soft tissue expertise alongside advanced imaging to optimize patient outcomes.

Referring veterinarians can submit cases via our website or contact us at 01270 439277.

Our team consists of certified and Advanced Practitioner surgeons with extensive experience in musculoskeletal and soft tissue surgery, as well as regenerative therapies. We provide collaborative management for referred patients, integrating advanced imaging, procedural expertise, and post-procedural rehabilitation.

Eden Vets Referrals Georgie

Georgina Timms – BVSc PGCertSAS MRCVS

Georgina Timms has completed advanced training in canine diagnostic musculoskeletal ultrasound, having undertaken the Canine Diagnostic MSK Ultrasound course led by Dr Debra Canapp at Canapp Sports Medicine (USA).

She works as part of the orthopaedic referral team, integrating MSK ultrasound findings into comprehensive case assessment, treatment planning, and post-intervention monitoring. This ensures continuity of care and clear communication with referring veterinary surgeons.
